Mr. Clean Advertisement

mr-clean-gender-stereotypes-in-advertising-itsnicethat

Although this ad is slightly older, it depicts perfectly the gender stereotype that woman are the ones who need to be cleaning the house. It shows a mother who appears to be teaching her daughter how to clean an item in the house and states that mothers should get back to what really matters; cleaning. Stereotypically, the woman is the one who takes care of the house while the men are away and act as the breadwinners. When it comes to the individuals used in the advertisement, you see that a mother is showing her daughter what all women should be doing.

This advertisement is also focusing on the idea that a woman can teach versus a man doing it. A mother can demonstrate to her daughter the proper way to clean, while the daughter seems to be pointing the spot and smiling. This goes to show occupations that a woman should be in versus a man. Women are depicted as having more patience and therefore can handle these kinds of situations better than men.

Coca-Cola Advertisement

coke-taste-the-feeling-11

This Coca-Cola advertisement goes along with the True Value advertisement that was previously listed. As the True Value ad shows a woman in a more masculine role, this one shows a more sexualized and stereotypical gender position. The picture above depicts a woman dolled up to add appeal to the advertisement. In a larger format, it shows how a woman should look; small and proper. It shows the stereotypes for how society pictures a woman’s appearance.

The advertisement also shows her carrying a tray. Typically when you see a platter, you assume the person is bringing the drinks to someone and more than likely for this scenario, to a group of guys who need to cool down. This advertisement goes to show that woman are stereotypically the one to cater to everyone else. That they are willing to serve.

True Value Advertisement

SmartSelect_20181007-194056_Chrome

This True Value advertisement counters the gender stereotypes that circle around which occupations a man or a woman should be placed in. Typically, in this situation, you would see more men considering the hardware around. This profession is viewed as more masculine, and therefore would be more suitable for men. Woman are more considered right for positions such as teachers or nurses. These are positions where a woman could take care of others.

However, this ad shows a woman front in the center within the hardware section, proving that woman can be masters at hardware too. Another stereotype is being broken within this picture which accounts for women being more sexualized. Typically, you would see this kind of outfit on a man versus a woman. Advertisements want to make a woman an icon, so they place her in costumes that would be more appealing to the eye.

Walmart Toy Advertisement

walmart-holiday-2014-catalogue-16

This Walmart Advertisement shows gender stereotypes starting from childhood with the toys children play with. In most Walmart’s, there is going to be a boys and girls section, instead of mixing all the toys together. However, many young girls want to play with the Truck or Track Set while some boys want to play with the kitchen sets. This advertisement depicts gender-specific toys, a stereotype that certain genders should only play with certain items.

This depiction could easily grow throughout adulthood as it gives children ideas of what is or is not possible for children. Boys play with dump trucks and race cars, so the idea of construction and racing seems more idealistic for them. Whereas for young girls, we play with kitchen sets and baby dolls. This depicts to girls that women are found more in that stereotypically female role, staying home and taking care of the kids. Thankfully, that stereotype is not as common as more aspects of medical toys are being found in the girls toy sections.

Gatorade Advertisement

Gatorade used this advertisement to depict how hard mothers work to make sure that their children succeed. Even though both parents typically cheer on their kids when it comes to athletics. Stereotypically, mother’s are the ones who have to sacrifice to raise the kids. Father’s are the ones working to bring home the “bacon” or money. This advertisement shows this stereotype in a variety of ways, including the language used on the poster and the individuals shown, or not shown.

The advertisement states that this mother would do whatever it takes to help you become who you want to be. This includes washing the sports equipment, planning her day around everyone else’s schedules, and going to every game to support her children. This shows how far a mother is willing to go. By the advertisement stating that the mother feels the pain her children endure, it depicts the stereotype that shows women being more emotional and are able to show empathy far better than men.
